The story of Community Wholesale Tire began nearly 90 years ago.
Michael Berra, a first generation American, grew up in an Italian neighborhood in St. Louis, Missouri, known as The Hill.
In 1928, at the age of 22, Mike opened a Sinclair Service Station on the corner of Kingshighway and Shaw.
After seven years operating the Kings-Shaw Super Station, Mike sold the station to start Community Tire Company.
At its inception in 1935, Community Tire sold new and used tires and batteries and had one mold for repairing used tires.
Mike's youngest son Phil became responsible for Community Wholesale Tire after graduating from college in 1974.
In 2006, Community Tire Company formally split, and Community Tire Retreading and Community Wholesale Tire became separate corporations.
Community Wholesale Tire’s third generation is now running the business as the Company is nearing its ninth decade in the tire industry. Andy Berra is the President – overseeing all operations. Adrienne Berra, the Executive Vice President, is responsible for HR and corporate administration for the Company, which has grown to over 300 employees. Nephew Mark Lukefahr is Vice President of Sales and has been with Community Tire for over 30 years.
The year 2023 marks Community Tire’s 88th year in business.
Much has changed in the industry over the past several decades, but the Company has kept up with the changing dynamics of the industry as it continues with the strong business practices and values first demonstrated by Mike Berra.

Over the years, Community Tire Company grew into one of the largest retreading and commercial tire businesses in the Midwest.
As the second generation of the Berra family became involved in the business, the Company’s retread and wholesale elements began to take on their own distinct identities.
Mike’s eldest son Michael took over Community Tire Retreading, which specializes in giant off-the-road retreading, truck retreading, and section repair.
Younger brother Phil became responsible for Community Wholesale Tire after graduating from college in 1974.
Our tradition of providing best in class personal service and quality products remains as important today as it was in 1935.
