Our History

The story of Community Wholesale Tire and the ITD marketing group begins over 100 years ago on April 6th, 1906, with the birth of Michael A. Berra.  A first generation American, Mike grew up in an Italian community in St. Louis known as “The Hill.”

In 1928, at the age of 22, Mike opened a Sinclair Service Station on the corner of Kingshighway and Shaw.  After seven years owning and operating the Kings-Shaw Super Station, Mike sold the station to start Community Tire Company.  At its inception in 1935, Community Tire sold new and used tires, batteries, and had one mold for repairing used tires.

Over the years, Community Tire Company grew into one of the largest retreading and commercial tire businesses in the Midwest.  As the second generation of the Berra family became involved in the business, Community Tire Company’s retread and wholesale elements began to take on their own distinct identities.  Michael Berra took over Community Tire Retreading, which specializes in giant off-the-road retreading, as well as truck retreading and section repair.  Younger brother Phil became responsible for Community Wholesale Tire after graduating from college in 1974.  Since that time, the wholesale division has grown to become one of the Midwest’s largest wholesale tire distributors.  Community Tire distributes from its four warehouses in St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield, Missouri and Peoria, Illinois to dealers throughout Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Iowa, Indiana, Kentucky, Nebraska, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.

In 2006, Community Tire Company formally split, and Community Tire Retreading and Community Wholesale Tire became separate corporations.  Community Wholesale Tire’s third generation is now working with Phil as the Company is midway through its 8th decade in the tire industry.  Andy is the President – overseeing all operations.  Adrienne, the Executive Vice President, is responsible for HR and corporate administration for the Company, which has grown to 230 employees.  Nephew Mark Lukefahr is the Vice President of Sales and has been with Community Tire for over 25 years.

As the 21st century rolls on, the future is bright for Community Wholesale and ITD.  In 2006, the Company relocated its headquarters from its downtown location to a 185,000 square foot facility in Hazelwood, Missouri.  The Kansas City operation relocated to a 180,000 square foot building.  In 2010, the Hazelwood location expanded with an additional 65,000 square feet of warehouse bringing the headquarters up to 250,000 square feet.

In 2015, Community opened its third warehouse in Springfield, Missouri allowing the Company to better serve its existing Southwest Missouri customers as well as expand service into Arkansas and Oklahoma.

Community Tire’s fourth distribution center located in Peoria, IL opened in 2018.  The 77,000 square foot warehouse allows Community to service many of its existing Central Illinois and Iowa customers at least twice daily.  The Company continues to look at additional routing options out of Peoria to increase the geographic area it can deliver multiple times per day.

2020 marks Community Tire’s 85th year in business.  Much has changed in the industry over the past several decades, but the Company has kept up with the changing dynamics of the industry as it continues with the strong business practices and values first demonstrated by Mike Berra.  Community Tire is committed to remaining a family owned and operated tire distributor and is focused on bringing you a full range of quality tires and the latest technology to improve your business.
